เกร็ดความรู้ภาษาอังกฤษวันนี้ มีสำนวนมาฝากครับ ส่วนเป็นสำนวนอะไร ไปติดตามกันเลยครับ

มีสำนวนหนึ่งที่เราใช้กันบ่อย และฝรั่งก็ใช้กันเยอะไม่ต่างจากเรา สำนวนนั้นก็คือ นำ้ท่วมหลังเป็ด ครับในภาษาอังกฤษ ใช้คำว่า when pigs fly (เวน พิกซ์ ฟลาย) หรือ pigs might fly (พิกซ์ ไมท์ ฟลาย)  หรือ pigs can fly (พิกซ์ แคน ฟลาย)

จะสังเกตุเห็นว่าฝรั่งเล่นสำนวนโดยเปรียบเทียบกับหมูแต่เราเปรียบเทียบกับเป็ด แต่ไม่ว่าจะเป็น เป็ดหรือ หมู ก็ได้ความหมายทำนองเดียวกัน เพราะ pig can never fly หมูบินไม่ได้ ทำนองเดียวกับ น้ำไม่เคยท่วมหลังเป็ด there will never be a flood over the duck back

แน่นอนครับ สำนวนทั้งที่เป็นของไทยเรา น้ำท่วมหลังเป็ด หรือของอังกฤษ เมื่อหมูบินได้ (when pigs fly) ก็ใช้กับเรื่องหรือสิ่งที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ (used to talk about something that is highly unlikely to ever happen)

มาลองดูตัวอย่างกันครับ
A: I'll have ​finished my work by 7 o'clock ​tomorrow.
B: And ​pigs might ​fly!
A: ผมจะงานเสร็จพรุ้งนี้ตอน 7 โมงเช้น
B: น้ำคงท่วมหลังเป็ด (หมูคงบินได้)

When pigs fly and then he will pay for our meal, I have never seen him paying for anyone in my life.

A pigs cannot fly, and he can't never stop loving at you. So, he will stop loving you when pigs can fly.
หมูบินไม่ได้และเขาก็ไม่สามารถหยุดรักคุณได้ เขาจะหยุดรักคุณได้ ก็ต่อเมื่อน้ำท่วมหลังเป็ด (เลี่ยนไปไหม๊ครับ)

The saying or idiom in English pigs might fly or pigs can fly or when pigs fly used to talk about thing that could never happen or thing that is impossible.

In Thai, we also have the very similar saying which refer to something that is highly unlikely to ever happen. The saying in Thai is "น้ำท่วมหลังเป็ด" (Narm Tuam Lung Ped), literally this means when there is a flood higher than duck's back.

In English, the comparison of the saying is done with the pig and verb to fly. But, the comparison is done with duck and the flood in Thai. These comparisons really make sense, don't you think. As, the pig will never be able to fly. Likewise, there will never be a flood that is higher than a duck's back no matter how bad the flood is.
