ถ่วงเวลา ในภาษาอังกฤษ
คำว่าถ่วงเวลาคือการทำให้ล่าช้าลง ถ่วงเวลา เป็นภาษาอังกฤษว่า ใช้คำว่า hold some/something up = to delay someone or somethinghold someone/something up
A: I have not finished my housework yet, could you please hold mum up for awhile.B: Be quick ok, I will not be able to hold her up very long.
A: ข้ายังทำงานบ้านไม่เสร็จ ไปถ่วงเวลาแม่ให้ซักครู่หน่อย.
B: เร็วๆนะ ข้าถ่วงเวลาแม่ไม่ได้นานนะ
B: I need to go to the toilet.
A: Don't try to hold thing up, I don't have all day
B: Ok, ok, I will be very quick.
B: ผมต้องไปห้องน้ำ

ซื้อเวลา มีความหมายคล้ายๆกับ ถ่วงเวลา คือ พยายามทำให้เรื่องที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้นเกิดช้ากว่าเดิมเพื่อประโยชน์ของตน ในภาษาอังกฤษก็ตรงๆเลยคือ buy time หรือ buy someone time ซื้อเวลาให้กับใคร

เตะถ่วง ในภาษาอังกฤษ
อีกคำหนึ่งที่มี ความหมายอย่างเดียวกับ hold something/someone up คือ ถ่วงเวลา หรือ ซื้อเวลา buy time ก็คือคำว่า เตะถ่วง ซึ่งใช้คำว่า drag someone's heels/feet แปลตรงๆก็คือลากส้นเท้าหรือเท้า หรืออีกคำหนึ่งคือ kick the can down the road เตะกระป๋องไปตามถนนdrag someone's heels/feet
The authorities are dragging their feet over enforcing the new law.เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังเตะถ่วงการบังคับใช้กฏหมายใหม่
