ครั้งที่แล้ว ผมเขียนถึง สุภาษิตสำนวนภาษาอังกฤษ เอามะพร้าวห้าวไปขายสวน ซึ่งกลับไปดูได้ที่  เอามะพร้ามห้าวไปขายสวน ภาษาอังกฤษ

มาครั้งนี้ก็อยากจะพูดถึงสำนวนที่มีความหมายใกล้เคียงกันกับ เอามะพร้าวห้าวไปขายสวน ก็คือ สอนจระเข้ว่ายน้ำ หรือ สอนหนังสือสังฆราช ซึ่งในภาษาอังกฤษ มีสำนวนในทำนองเดียวกัน คือ teach grandmother to suck eggs หรือ teach one's grandmother to suck eggs นั่นเอง แปลตรงๆก็คือ สอนคุณยายหรือคุณย่าให้ดูดไข่หรือกินไข่ ความหมายในภาษาอังกฤษก็คือ giving advice to someone about a subject that they already know more about than you.

don't/never teach grandmother to suck eggs

เคยเห็นสำนวนที่น่าจะมีความหมายคล้ายๆกันคือ
don't teach your grandmother how to milk ducks
don't teach your grandmother to steal sheep

ตัวอย่างการใช้สำนวนนี้

Hey, you don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs. He is a programmer and he knows how to write that easy piece of code.
เฮ ไม่ต้องมาสอนจระเข้ว่ายน้ำ เขาเป็น programmer เขารู้วิธีการเขียน code แบบง่ายๆนั้น

I know the way around here Mitty I can even close my eyes and do the walking, you don't need to teach your grandmother to suck eggs.
ผมรู้ทางแถวนี้เป็นอย่างดี มิตตี้ ผมหลับตาเดินยังได้เลย ไม่จำเป็นต้องสอนหนังสือสังฆราชหรอก

Teaching your teacher how to count is like teaching your grandmother to suck eggs.
สอนคุณครูให้นับเลขก็เหมือนกับการสอนหนังสือสังฆราช

The one who has open minded will not complain when someone tries to teach him something he already know well even it is like teaching grandmother to suck eggs.
คนที่ใจกว้างจะไม่บ่นเมื่อมีคนพยายามสอนเขาในเรื่องที่เขารู้ดี ถึงแม้มันจะเหมือนสอนจระเข้ว่ายน้ำ

She was a sensible girl who didn’t talk very much or try to teach her grandmother to suck eggs.
เธอเป็นผู้หญิงอ่อนไหวผู้ซึ่งเป็นคนที่ไม่ค่อยพูดมากหรือ(ไม่)พยายามเป็นคนอวดรู้อวดฉลาด

Explanation In English

There is a saying in Thai meaning "to give advice to someone about a subject that they already know more about than you" and this has the very same meaning to English proverb or idiom "to teach grandmother to suck eggs". This Thai saying is สอนจระเข้ว่ายน้ำ (Sorn Jorrake Wai Narm - teaching a crocodile to swim) or สอนหนังสือสังฆราช  (Sorn Nung Seu Sang Ka Rart - teaching the Supreme Patriarch to read and write)

In Thai, with this saying, crocodile is referred as the expert in swimming and Supreme Patriarch  is the expert in reading and writing. So there is no need to teach the the crocodile to swim as it has an expertise in swimming and the same way with the Supreme Patriarch who has great knowledge in writing and reading. While in English The comparison is done with grandmother who is older and has more experience in life.
