สวัสดีครับ พบกับเกร็ดความรู้ภาษาอังกฤษวันนี้ มาดูบทความภาษาอังกฤษเกี่ยวกับร่างกายของเราหน่อยครับ ผมเชื่อว่าทุกคนเคยจาม คำจามในภาษาอังกฤษที่แปลว่า sneeze (verb - สนีซ)  ไม่ใช่กริยาที่ใช้ ขวาน axe (noun/verb - แอคซฺ) จามนำครับ

ผมเป็นคนหนึ่งที่จามบ่อยมาก จนพูดได้ว่า

sneezing is my regular visitor, it comes every once in a while (มาบ่อยเกิ้นห่างกับบ้างก็ได้)

ครับเราเจอกันบ่อยมากเพราะ ผมเป็นโรคภูมิแพ้ หรือที่เรียกว่า allergy (noun - แอล' เลอจี-ภูมิแพ้/อาการแพ้) เคยไปทำ allergy test โดนไปหลายเข็มแต่ก็ไม่เจอ เข้าใจว่าน่าจะเป็นที่ดินฟ้าอากาศ เคยสงสัยไหมครับว่าทำไมเราถึงจาม อะไรทำให้เราจาม บางคนอาจจะตอบว่าฝุ่นรอบตัวเรา หรือดินฟ้าอากาศอย่างที่ผมเข้าใจ ไปดูว่าคำตอบที่มีในใจว่าใช่หรือไม่ครับ ตามผมมาครับ

For some strange reason, the act of sneezing has long been considered more than just a physical action.  All kinds of ideas and legends have grown up about sneezing, as if it had special significance.

ด้วยเหตุผลบางอย่าง การจามถูกมองมาเป็นเวลายาวนานว่าไม่ใช่แค่อาการทางร่างกาย ทุกๆความคิดเห็นและทุกๆเรื่องราวมีมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆเกี่ยวกับกับจาม คล้ายๆกับว่ามันมีนัยสำคัญพิเศษ

Actually, sneezing is the act of sending out air from the nose and mouth. It is a reflex act, and happens without our control. Sneezing occurs when the nerve-endings of the mucous membranes of the nose are irritated. It can also happen, curiously enough. when  our optic never is stimulated by a bright light!

จริงๆแล้ว การจามเป็นอาการของการพ่นลมออกมาจากจมูกและปาก มันเป็นกริยาตอบกลับหรือตอบสนองอัตโนมัติ และเกิดขึ้นโดยควบคุมไม่ได้ การจามเกิดขึ้นเมื่อ ปลายประสาท (nerve-endings - เนิร์ฟว เอนดิง) ของ เยื่อบุผิวในช่องจมูก (mucous membranes - มิว'เคิส  เมม'เบรน) เกิดการระคายเคือง (irritated - อิริเททิด)

The irritation that causes sneezing may be due to a swelling of the mucous membrane of the nose, as happens when we have a cold; It may be due to foreign bodies that somehow get into the nose;  or it may be due to an allergy. The act of sneezing is an attempt by the body to expel air to get rid of the irritating bodies.

การระคายเคื่องที่ทำให้เกิดการจามอาจจะเกิดจากการบวมของเยื่อบุผิวในช่องจมูก ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นตอนที่เราเป็นหวัด (ไข้หวัดภาษาอังกฤษ) อาจจะเกิดจากสิ่งแปลกปลอมที่เข้ามาในจมูก หรือไม่ก็เกิดจากอาการการแพ้ การจามเป็นความพยายามของร่ายการที่จะดันลมเพื่อที่จะกำจัดสิ่งที่ทำให้ระคายเคือง

From earliest times, however, people have wondered about sneezing, and it has universally been  regarded as an omen of some kind.  the Greeks,  Romans, and Egyptians regarded the sneeze a warning in times of danger, and as a way of foretelling the future. If you sneezed to the right, it was considered lucky; to the left, unlucky.

อย่างไรก็ดี ในสมัยก่อนผู้คนก็มีความสงสัยเกี่ยบกับการจาม ถึงขนาดที่ว่าเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับรางบอกเหตุ (omen -โอ'เมิน - รางบอกเหตุ ) บางอย่าง ในสมัยกรีก โรมันและอียิปเชื่อว่าการจามเป็นการเตือนภัย และเป็นวิธีหนึ่งในการทำนายเรื่องในอนาคต ถ้าจามไปทางขวาจะถือว่ามีโชค แต่ถ้าจามไปทางซ้ายจะโชคร้าย (ในบ้านเราจะมีการกล่าวติดตลกๆว่ามีคนกำลังคิดถึง  - ผู้เขียน)

The reason we say “ God bless you” after someone sneezes cannot be traced to any single origin, what seems to be connected with ancient beliefs. The Romans thought a person expelled evil spirits when he sneezed, so everyone present would say “Good luck to you” after a sneeze, hoping the effort to expel the spirits would succeed.

เหตุที่มีการกล่าวว่า "God bless you" (ก๊อด เบรส ยู) (หรือบางทีก็จะได้ยินสั้นๆว่า bless you  - ผู้เขียน) หลังจากที่มีคนจามยังหาแหล่งที่มาที่แน่ชัดไม่ได้ ซึ่งดูเหมือนว่าจะเกี่ยวข้องกับความเชื่อโบราณ คนโรมันเชื่อว่าการจามจะเป็นการขับไล่สิ่งชั่วร้ายออกไป ดังนั้นคนที่อยู่ใกล้ๆก็จะกล่าวว่า  "ขอให้คุณโชคดี" หลังจากที่มีการจาม โดยหวังว่าการพยายามนั้นจะช่วยขับไล่ (expel - verb - อิคซฺเพล) สิ่งชั่วร้ายได้สำเร็จ

Primitive people believed that sneezing was a sign of approaching death. When anyone sneezed, therefore, people said "God help you!" because that person sneezing was in danger.

คนรุ่นเก่า เชื่อว่าการจามเป็นสัญญาณของการขยับเข้าไปใกล้ (approach - verb- อะโพรช' ขยับเข้าใกล้) ความตาย ดังนั้นเมื่อมีคนจามก็จะพูดกันว่า "ขอให้พระเจ้าคุ้มครองคุณ" (God Help you) เพราะคนที่จามกำลังมีอันตราย

There is a legend that before the days of Jacob, a person died after sneezing. Jacob interceded with God, according to this tale, so that people could sneeze without dying - provided a benediction followed every sneeze!

มีตำนานกล่าวว่าก่อนสมัยจาคอบ คนเสียชิวิตจากการจาม ตามตำนานจาคอบได้วิงวอนพระผู้เป็นเจ้าให้ผู้คนจามได้โดยไม่ต้องเสียชิวิต และก็ขอให้อำนวยพรให้หลังจากมีการจามทุกครั้ง

During the 6th century that was the plague in Italy, and Pope Gregory the Great ordered that prayers be said against sneezing. It was at this time that the custom of saying "God bless you" to persons who sneezed became established.

ช่วงศัตวรรษที่ 6 เกิดโรคระบาดในประเทศอิตาลี สมเด็จพระสันตะปาปาเกรกอรีได้สั่งให้มีการสวดมนต์ให้กับการจาม (เพื่อขับไล่โรคระบาด) นับเป็นช่วงเวลาที่เกิดธรรมเนียมการกล่าว(อวยพรให้)กับคนที่จาม ว่า "God bless you"
