one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel
(วัน รอท'เทิน แอพ'เพิล สปอยลฺซ์ เธอะ โฮล บาร์'เริล)

one rotten apple spoils the bunch
(วัน รอท'เทิน แอพ'เพิล สปอยลฺซ์ เธอะ บันชฺ)

one bad apple spoils the whole barrel
(วัน แบด แอพ'เพิล สปอยลฺซ์ เธอะ โฮล บาร์'เริล)

it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch
(อิท โอนลี่ เทคฺซ์ วัน แบด แอพ'เพิล ทู สปอยลฺว์ เธอะ บันชฺ)

จะเห็นว่า rotten อาจจะจะใช้คำว่า bad แทนก็ได้มีความหมายในเดียวกันคือหมายถึง เนาหรือเสีย

ถ้าจะบอกว่า apple เสียเราก็จะใช้คำว่า
go bad
go rotten

เช่น
The apples went bad/rotten very quickly.
แอปเปิ้ลเสียเร็วมาก

The bread that goes mouldy is not edible as it has gone bad.

เมื่อพูดถึงคำว่า bunch ก็อยากจะพูดถึงอีกความหมายหนึ่งที่เป็น collective noun ที่แปลว่าเครือกล้วย ซึ่งเรียกว่า a bunch of bananas คือ กล่วยหนึ่งเครือ หรือบางทีก็เรียกว่า a cluster of bananas ส่วนกล้วย 1 หวี น่าจะเรียกว่า a hand of bananas และกล้วย 1 ลูกก็เรียก banana หรือ finger ที่กล้วยหนึ่งหวีเรียก เป็น hand ก็น่าจะมากจากที่กล่วย 1 ลูกเรียกว่า finger นั้นเอง

คำว่า spoil (สปอยลฺ) แปลว่า ทำให้เสีย ซึ่งบางท่านอาจจะเคยเห็นมาก่อนจากสำนวนที่ว่า รักวัวให้ผูกรักลูกให้ตี ซึ่งภาษอังกฤษก็คือ

spare the rod and spoil the kid
(สแปรฺ เธอะ รอด แอนด์  สปอยลฺ เธอะ คิด)

คำว่า spoil พอเป็น adjective แผลงเป็น spoilt จะมีความหมายใกล้เคียงกับคำว่า rotten ที่แปลว่าเน่าเสียเลยทีเดีย

don't eat spoilt food as it will make you feel ill.
อย่ากินอาหารที่เสียแล้ว เพราะจะทำให้ป่วย

คำว่า rod แปลว่าไม่เรียว แต่ก็แปลได้อีกอย่างว่า คันเบ็ด หรือที่เรียกอีกอย่างว่า finishing rod

In English

We have the saying in Thai that has the same meaning as English saying which means a bad person could make all people in the group appear or look bad too. The saying in English is "one bad apple spoil the whole barrel" or "one rotten apple spoil the whole barrel". The saying in Thai we say, ปลาเน่าตัวเดียวเหม็นทั้งข้อง means "one rotten fish spoil the whole creel" or literally means one rotten fish make the whole creel smelly. The creel in Thai we call it ข้อง (khǿng) which is bamboo container to carry the caught fish.
